Porn Addiction Terminology/Glossary Used In Nofap Community

So you learned that you are addicted to masturbation to pornography and you decided to quit this nasty habit that’s holding you down in life. You will probably need some help with quitting porn because it’s necessary to make some changes in your lifestyle and your thinking. You can find that help in an accountability partner or a personal coach, or a broader community of people who are also quitting porn. When you join such an accountability partnership or a community you will inevitably come across terminology related to sexual health that you might not understand. Below is the list of the most common nofap terms and abbreviations and their meanings.

Accountability Partner – Accountability partner is a person who helps you stay accountable during your recovery. You are accountable to him or her and he or she is accountable to you and you hold each other responsible for your behavior and progress in your recovery.

Binge/Binging – Prolonged and repeated masturbation to porn until complete sexual exhaustion.

Blue Balls – Slang term used for testicles that get painful after long streak and sexual arousal without ejaculation.

Blue Petal – Female equivalent of blue balls.

Dopamine Detox – A concept of not indulging in any activity that would raise dopamine artificially e.g. no porn, no masturbation, no TV, no social media, no junk food, etc. The idea is to recover the sensitivity of dopamine receptors in the brain as fast as possible so one can feel more pleasure from normal things in life after being depressed from addicted to porn.

ED – Erectile dysfunction – Inability to get or maintain an erection or inability to reach orgasm during sexual intercourse.

Edging – Masturbating to the brink of orgasm and stopping right before “going over the edge” to extend the pleasure from masturbation for longer. By engaging in this practice one quickly builds a tolerance to dopamine which is a cause of depression.

Jerk off/Jack off – To masturbate.

Soft Mode – Rebooting without porn, but with the option to masturbate or having sex with significant other (not recommended if you’re serious about quitting porn addiction).

Hard Mode – Rebooting without porn and masturbation, but with the option to have sex with significant other (good option, because you’re wiring your brain to be aroused by real partner).

Monk Mode – Rebooting without any sexual release. Ideally without or with a minimum of artificial dopamine stimulation (no TV, junk food, ) (the best option for rapid recovery and nofap benefits).

PE – Premature ejaculation – Extreme arousal during sex which results in an inability to control orgasm and ejaculating too early.

PIED – Porn-Induced Erectile Dysfunction – Inability to get or maintain an erection during sex due to lack of arousal and anxiety. Person’s brain and body is conditioned to be aroused by masturbation to porn and not human partner. PIED is curable or reversible by rebooting.

Reboot/Rebooting –  The recovery process during which a person restores his or her brain to “factory defaults” and no longer craves porn and masturbation as a default behavior. It usually takes 90 days or longer to rewire the brain structure to that point.

Wet dream – When the body releases excess semen automatically during sleep. It’s not considered a relapse.
